Control challenges in biological and cognitive systems

Historically many models of sensory-motor integration and behavior came from control theory.Up until very recently,however,the main line of investigation studied the sensory or the encoding aspect of the information flow in the brain. In the past decade due to many technological advances there has been a revival of interest on the far end motor control or the decoding aspect of the problem. The spectrum is so much widened from flight control in insects to human self-control processes in social interaction.This opens new challenges with set-ups to study multimodal processing in closed loops where animals control the input signals and the need for high through put methods for quantifying behavior. At the other extreme there is the problem of the interaction between motor control and decision making and how for example we may implement decision making in autonomous systems given that there is a huge amount of choices and hence over-activation for a given specific task. Finally there is now a new prospect of how control studies help in diseases and rehabilitation as well as how direct interventions such as implanting an electrode in the brain may control depression and many other cognitive disorders.
