Using Substrate Integrated Waveguide in the Feed Network of Planar Antenna Arrays

Because of its low loss, the Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) can be employed in the feed network of large planar antenna arrays to improve the G/T (gain-over-noise-temperature) performance of the array in comparison with this performance in arrays using a microstrip feed network. One of the goals of this talk is to introduce various feed network configurations such as corporate and serial ones realized in the SIW technology. We demonstrate how a SIW feed network can be fabricated as an additional PCB layer underneath the layers supporting the array elements. Furthermore, we introduce amplifier circuits in which SIW is used as the underlying technology such that the input and output ports of the amplifier are of the SIW-type. They can thus be incorporated in the passive SIW feed network of the array in order to improve the front-end characteristics and to reduce fabrication costs. Realization of a single-stage X-band SIW amplifier for integration in the feed network of a receive antenna array will be demonstrated. Moreover, a SIW balanced amplifier circuit using a wide-band SIW power splitter/combiner will be presented. This SIW amplifier can be utilized in the feed network of a transmit antenna array.
